Sharp R-820JS Review

When my range started acting up, I came across the concept of a microwave that includes convection capabilities just like the oven on my stove. This sounded like a great idea, since I don't tend to use the range that often due to the heat it generates.

I began my quest to find the best convection microwave oven for me. The Sharp R-820JS is a worthy contender with many positive reviews. I found lots of good information during my research and am happy to share the results with you.

How's the food?

Most people were happy with their culinary creations. Roasted foods were reported to be at least comparable to that of a conventional oven if not better. Reheating baked items and pizza were mentioned as being exceptionally good. Grilled items were good, too, if you can do without that charcoal flavor. As with any appliance, some experimentation with cooking times may be needed before you cook your dinner to perfection.

How is it Built?

Many reviewers felt that the Sharp R-820js is heavy and constructed well. The exterior is dark silver, and the interior is stainless steel. A few complained of rusting starting on the inside which is likely due to not wiping the unit out promptly.

Be sure you know the wattage of microwaves that you use frequently. Some complained that the unit is underpowered; however, if you are accustomed to using a microwave that has a higher wattage, then you will definitely notice the lack of power if you use switch to a lower-wattage microwave. The Sharp R820JS has 900 watts.

Will it Look Good in my Kitchen?

While not unattractive, this is not the most stylish microwave on the market. The exterior is a dark silver and not stainless steel. It's really a matter of personal taste as some people liked the styling.

Where Should I Put It?

Since this model is vented in the back and not on the sides, you can place the unit's sides 2" from the wall. This appliance also is reputed to fit well into a corner of your counter. As the Sharp R-820JS is rather deep, don't expect to have much room directly in front of the microwave. Also note that this appliance cannot be installed over a heat source. While the outside of the unit does get warm when in use, reviewers report that it is not hot to the touch.

Is It Really Useful?

Several reviewers commented that this is the most-used appliance in their kitchens. It's especially helpful if you are only cooking for one or two people since you don't have to heat up a large range oven. You may find that you don't need some of your other appliances such as your grill, toaster oven, and maybe even your conventional oven since this one tool does it all. If you have hot days where you live, being able to enjoy fresh-baked cookies and other baked goodies without heating up your conventional oven is a major bonus.

How to Create Tasty Meals

A little experimentation may be needed to find the perfect timing and temperature for your favorite dishes. Several reviewers noted that cooking times were longer than with other microwaves or conventional ovens. Some of this may be due to the lower wattage of the Sharp R-820JS.

If you want to make gravy, be sure to add water to the pan so that the drippings don't get burned on. Foods that aren't cooking well in the appliance may do just fine if they are elevated. This is especially true when addressing some reviewer's complaints that popcorn doesn't come out well. Apparently, putting the popcorn bag on the wire rack or an inverted plate will make that corn pop the way you like.

The grill feature was liked by many, but a few did not like the results. One suggestion is to use the grill feature on smaller cuts like a hamburger and roast larger cuts such as steaks.

How Do I Work This Thing?

No worries, the Sharp R-820JS has a digital readout that will walk you through using each feature. A handy quick reference card is included so you don't have to dig out the manual for basic functions. Speaking of that manual, most reviewers found it to be helpful although recipes specific to the convection feature are not included.

Clean up, Clean Up

Hate to clean? The stainless steel interior wipes up easily with a damp cloth. The turntable and accompanying pedestal can be removed and put straight into your dishwasher for cleaning. Of course, you will need to be sure to wipe out the unit after each use. Like any other microwave, baked on residue can be difficult to remove.

What If It Breaks?

You will receive a warranty for one year for repairs and have the option to purchase a service contract to cover even more years. If you buy from Amazon, the process for returns is easy as you just have to print out a label, package the oven, and drop the appliance off at UPS for shipping.
